I come from a family of frugal DIYers (sewing, knitting, and other needle crafts. Learning to sew taught me the importance of construction and fit. Knowing one’s body type is key to finding garments that flatter. My mother taught me the importance of quality over quantity, so I’d rather invest in a few investment pieces (classic Coach bags and other well made ¬– mostly leather items) than have a closet full of poorly made items that will fall apart after a few uses. This rule is broken for trendy pieces or items that won’t be used frequently. Another rule is to avoid trends that were popular when I was in high school. Yes, I am at the age where this phenomena has become an issue!
